How durable are the Folio Society books?

Hello, everyone!
I've been doing some research into the Folio Society edition but couldn't find anything in regards to the books' durability. I really like the design and the illustrations, but I am quite a bit worried about how they will hold up in the long run. I don't plan on having them as reading copies, mind you, and would only take them off the shelf occasionally.
My main concern is with the gilt used for decorating the swirl patterns and the details in and around the centerpieces. I've seen some pictures where they have been rubbed off. Is the foil prone to flaking or have the books just been poorly handled? I know their spines are susceptible to sun fading, but avoiding such exposure is sound advice for all books anyway, so not that big of a deal.
So, am I justified in my concerns? Is there anything else you think I should know?

Yes. Here are photos of mine from 1997 (so 27 years later)...

Can't see any fading. If there is any, I cannot see it in "real-life". Think it is just the camera....

But this edition (and especially the Hobbit) is prone to fading in sunlight.......
