An important collection of paintings, drawings, and other materials by the distinguished British illustrator Pauline Diana Baynes (1922-2008) has been bequeathed by the artist to the Williams College Oxford Programme with the wish that it be placed in the care of the Chapin Library.

Pauline gave away or sold most of her Tolkien and Lewis artwork, but the remaining archive still contains many related pieces, such as from Bilbo's Last Song and Poems and Stories as well as hundreds of other paintings and drawings for works ranging from Aesop's fables to cookbooks. Also, more than 2000 books comprising her working reference library and works by other artists that inspired her are a part of the archive. The Chapin Library will be documenting and organizing all of the materials over the next few years, in the capable hands of the Chapin Library staff including Wayne Hammond, Assistand Chapin Librarian, with the assistance of Christina Scull.
