Writing to Hugh Brogan, Tolkien notes that he does not know what is happening with The Lord of the Rings which he had hoped would be published this year. He says that negotiations are still ongoing. He continues that he typed the story himself as it was too expensive to have done professionally. He concludes that a new edition of The Hobbit will be published soon which brings it closer to the the Lord of the Rings.Tolkien is talking in most part about chapter 5 'Riddles in the Dark' which was vastly rewritten to bring the story into line with what he wrote of the episode in the Lord of the Rings[1]
