Details of the sender and contents of this letter are currently unknown but Bodleian Library remark that MS Tolkien A 19/3 "fol. 138 is written on the back of part of a letter to Tolkien, from Retford, Notts, dated 23 Oct 1922" is written on the back of a part of this letter.

MS Tolkien A fols. 135-161 relate to 'Watling Street', paper presented to the Language Colloquium, University of Leeds, 25 October 1922. The talk was given at 12 Beech Grove Terrace.^{See also Chronology, p. 128[1]}
