Tolkien replies to a letter from Ragnar Furuskog Letter from Ragnar Furuskog to The British Council • 16 October 1944 [forwarded to JRRT on 1 November] (#2463)[1] . He advises Furuskog not to pursue his work into the phonology of manuscript B of the Katherine Group. He and Simonne d'Ardenne had been working on an edition of Seinte Katerine and intended to investigate the 'AB' languages fully. The delay was due to the war. He further remarks that his B.Litt student Mary Salu had completed an index of Ancrene Riwle, which was begun by Elaine Griffiths, a thesis was shortly to follow. Tolkien suggests other subjects.

Tolkien goes on to say that obtaining manuscripts and copies is difficult given the current conflict as manuscripts have been sent to "safe places". He may be able to arrange for his transcript to be copied.
