Lewis writing to Tolkien says that "one can at best only wound, not kill, the dragon. All my philosophy of history hangs upon a sentence of your own 'Deeds were done which were not wholly in vain.'" He asks if it is still possible to "exchange greetings" for the Holy 'Feast of the Nativity' during the "ghastly Xmas" holidays, if so, he wishes it to Tolkien and Edith.
