RQG writes to his father RCG, saying he is thankful for receiving a note from Tolkien that day. He is certain that peace will not be declared on the 26th. He thinks of what an extraordinary walk it would be to go from the Alps to the sea along "No Man's Land" between the two forces.

He describes a deserted garden he had seen, and calls it "one of the few really lovely things that the devastation of war produces." He wishes he was far from the front lines.
