Tolkien thanks Stanley Unwin for the excellent news from America, where The Hobbit is selling well, and it has won a prize of $250. Rayner's review of the first few tentative chapters of the sequel is appreciated, and Tolkien will try to have less "hobbit talk" though he does like it.
Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull note that Tolkien apologizes for issues with the Hall Beowulf for which he declined to edit, citing a lack of time. He regrets approving the proofs of Elaine Griffiths work and says that he should not have been so hasty to approve it. Tolkien shares his lengthy and entirely negative opinions about the Clark Hall translation.
