TCG Letter #399 / Carpenter Letter #152

From
J.R.R. Tolkien
To
Rayner Heppenstall
Date
23 September 1954
Type
Unknown
Transcript
Partial
Heppenstall asked what dialect the speakers should adopt for the radio program The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth, Beorhthelm's Son. Tolkien replied that none was required, since there was no difference of social standing between the speakers. Essex of the East Saxons was a very different affair from Northfolk and Southfolk.

In the 2023 revised edition of Letters, a brief introductory sentence is added where Tolkien laments leaving Heppenstall's previous letter unanswered for so long, especially as it mentioned being willing to put the program on the air. Additionally the letter date is altered from the 22nd September to the 23rd September.
