Tolkien responds to Mrs. Mitchison's kind letter and her generous and perceptive review of "The Lord of the Rings." He discusses the complexity of the work, addressing the criticism that it is a simple fight between Good and Evil. Tolkien explains the mythological history behind the story, focusing on the Downfall of Númenor and the transition from a flat world to a round Earth in his imagined world. He delves into the fate of mortals and Elves, their connections to paradise, and the Half-elven's ability to choose their fate. Tolkien also expresses regret about the neglect of the Ice-bay of Forochel and offers to send a copy of the chronology of the Second and Third Ages. The letter concludes with Tolkien expressing the need for a reprint of "The Fellowship of the Ring."
