TCG Letter #402 / Carpenter Letter #154

J.R.R. Tolkien
Naomi Mitchison
25 September 1954
Autograph Letter Signed
Tolkien responds to Mrs. Mitchison's kind letter and her generous and perceptive review of The Lord of the Rings. He discusses the complexity of the work and explains the mythological history behind the story. He delves into the fate of mortals and Elves, their connections to paradise, and the Half-elven's ability to choose their fate. Tolkien offers to send a copy of the chronology of the Second and Third Ages. The letter concludes with Tolkien expressing the need for a reprint of The Fellowship of the Ring.
