TCG Letter #487

From
J.R.R. Tolkien
To
Jane Neave
Date
15 November 1961
Type
Autograph Letter Signed
Transcript
Partial
Tolkien has been asked to provide more poems to go with 'Tom Bombadil' as the book is too small according to GA&U. He notes that he believed a small volume was what was desired but he has "raked up and refurbished" poems that had been published previously.

The letter is held at the Marquette University along with a complete transcript.

Christie's 20th Century Books and Manuscripts, 2 December 2003, pp. 25-6 (A two page letter to Tolkien's aunt Jane Neave, dated 15 November 1961. The lot description includes quotes discussing The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, as well as his former chair at Oxford: "I wasn't a professor of "Literature" - which I still think is not a good basis for academic study". The first page of the letter is reproduced in a photograph.)
