To
C.A. Furth (of George Allen and Unwin)
Date
5-7 September 1937
Type
Autograph Letter Signed
Transcript
Partial
Writing to C.A. Furth, and apologizes for his lengthy letter regarding the dustcover blurb. Tolkien believes he is still waiting on five copies of The Hobbit but says he will need twelve to send to various places including Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester, Cambridge, etc. He has no time currently to work on Mr. Bliss as his research fellowship is taking all his time, but he will try to make some progress as he can.

On the seventh September Tolkien adds a postscript stating that his friend from Leeds, W.R. Childe, and other personal connections may help promote the book at home and abroad. He finishes with the request for the picture of him to be returned as Edith, his wife, wishes it back in her possession.

Two quotes from this letter are known (see references). The letter is held at the Tolkien–George Allen & Unwin archive at HarperCollins.
