Tolkien writes, thanking Lanier for the book The War for the Lot by Lanier himself. Tolkien says that he found it quite original, and frightening. Tolkien queries how it arrived.
Tolkien then mentions marketing for the figures, stating he is happy for them to marketed as "approved" by him. If the publisher has no objections, he will write again tomorrow to confirm.
Tolkien then goes on to talk about The Silmarillion, saying it is mostly grim and has no comedy.
The original letter along with a complete transcript is held at the Marquette archives.
