£500 or offers may get you somewhere maybe?
Hope helps

Yep, I'd agree with that. I wouldn't personally see it going for much more than £500 (but equally, who knows)?

I agree with the others. That seems a bit high especially since it doesn't contain the original dust jacket.

I'd probably say go with auction format as well. Otherwise, you end up with the situation like the recent 1942 A&U with jacket (which numerically speaking in terms of production numbers is rarer than the corresponding book club edition) , where the price keeps dropping and buyers just start to play the "how low will it go game".

Sold for £550 according to eBay, which sounds about right.

Nice one. That was bang on what it was worth, IMHO. I decided not to make an offer (partly because I have bought a couple of early Hobbits recently), but if I had, it would have been pretty much on the nose what you paid.

Unfortunately it’s not so easy getting reasonable prices, especially on eBay. I’m very pleased that this wasn’t so in this case.
Looking at the “Northern Venture” sale it seems to be as described...

Unfortunately there are a degree of speculative sellers that have unreasonable price expectations and let things sit forever. I'm of the opinion that a '42 Hobbit, be it A&U or BC without a jacket in reasonable condition is a £500 item, but that doesn't stop them sitting for two or three times that on eBay and Abe for years.

Items like Northern Venture are hard to price, I think. Obviously very rare, but equally a minuscule market (probably in the single figures). It is worth what that minuscule market is willing to shell out.
