On the Tolkien buying news for me, my wife's paperback edition of The Fall of Gondolin is coming out (May 5 I believe). She doesn't like the hardback format. For myself, I've got A Secret Vice on order as well, in paperback - which will go with my paperback of On Fairy-Stories in that sense.

For non-Tolkien, to stray a bit, I've got the next Bernard Cornwell on order as well (in the format I like) called Sword of Kings, and lastly from Harry Potter I'll be getting the Slytherin editions in hardback for Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows. Oh I've also got the new illustrated edition of Quidditch Through the Ages ordered too.

George R.R. Martin has until October to announce The Winds of Winter to be published "this year" (after he announced A Dance With Dragon's completing (not of the first draft, but when it was DONE) it appeared about 3 months later.)

I think that's it for books.....

Nice find! Did you get the single issue or the extremely big and heavy collected 1927 volume?

I'll review your studies later, assuming they are not too much of a boar.

The 1923 collected volume (Deagol has the 1927 volume pictured at tolkienbooks.net but footnotes it with "The image opposite shows the 1927 volume. The 1923 volume is identical in appearance except for the year.").

The collected volume was printed in 1967 in New York (so this is a reprint, not a true 1st), but for less than £20 I figured it was worth it to have a copy.

My mistake, thought I knew it by heart. I had the original 1923 collected volume, but passed it on (to one of the members here if I recall correctly!): too big and heavy for my taste (and bookshelf), with only that one article of interest to me. Got the reissue of the article they did a while ago, though.

It is rather.... large, yes.

I am having fun browsing through it, however. For Tolkien in 1923, there are a few possibilities easily checked.

No mention of The Gryphon (January). Not surprising.

No mention of The Microcosm Vol VIII no. 1 which he had a poem in, but no.2 (Summer) does. Maybe they just didn’t submit no.1? Or it was cut for space that week.

My favorite find, though, is this review of A Northern Venture in the July 12, 1923 issue (p. 474)

Damn, I guessed "The Review of English Studies" due to the Hali Maidenhood reference. Can't be right all the time.

My favorite find is the booklet itself
I've just picked it up from my local post office...
