The Howe set isn't that common a find, is it? I agree it's still about a £50 set if you do find it though.

Uncommon as a set, but I see them fairly frequently (as these things go) individually.

The only thing rare/uncommon with either of these sets is when you have the original publishers slipcases (which are genuinely fairly uncommon).

Allen & Unwin, 1980, Fine book and very good jacket, with minor wear and scuffing to edges, spine title faded. Considered a companion to the History of Middle-earth set, however collectible on its own and now quite scarce.

The Hobbit, J.R.R Tolkien, George Allen and Unwin, 1972
Key feature: The condition of this volume is stunning

About the book:

For sale is a remarkable example of The Hobbit, dating from the golden year of 1972.
This edition replicates the original, with amazing illustrations, endpaper maps and the Dragon covers.
This example is remarkably well-preserved. A great investment piece.

I would of thought the key feature was that it does not have the dust-jacket, seller forgets to mention this

I guess that's what makes it rare

I see the same guy is selling a 1st edition / 1st impression of the 1976 the Hobbit Deluxe edition for £459 (I am looking around for a good copy of this one btw).

I guess the price he's asking is 3/4x the real price as he's doing on Unfinished Tales?

It's not from the Golden Year of 1972, so maybe you could negotiate a reduction...

The "Golden Year of 1972", ahhh yes, the new standard in Tolkien collecting.

Very disappointed that Deagol does not have a section on his excellent website just devoted to the Golden Year of 1972
