W/r/t TH, it is definitely important to have a two volume version available, given it is such a long and heavy book.

My understanding is the children’s group at HC was planning on breaking TH into three “young reader” chapbooks. The switch was made to two volumes to align with the movies. They had just been printed when the studio changed to three movies, ironically.

Ah, my assumption was it was because purely because of the original two movie plan. Funny that they originally were going to go with three and switched at just the wrong time.

Interesting! Did not know that they were initially planning for 3. I had thought that they were doing it as 2, as at that time, it was going to be two films.

PS, while in 2 volumes, the CONTENT of the books (interio artwork, etc) is essentially this: https://blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/product/The-Hobbit-or-There-and-Back-Again-by-J-R-R-Tolkien-David-Wyatt/9780007458424 , with David Wyatt's chapter sketches.

Just a head's up if anyone is unable to get the 2-volume, this would be the 'runner up', of sorts.

These are the included images (sorry for not knowing their NAMES, though):

- Smaug (usually seen on the cover of the Alan Lee illustrated edition)
- Bilbo standing outside of Bag End (new illustrated edition cover, and cover of this collection)
- Gandalf leaving them at Mirkwood (rear dustjacket image of the illustrated edition)
- The company in the tree
- The Trolls being turned into stone

Here's the back of the poster collection which shows all six poster thumbnails.

insurrbution, you left one piece off your list, as there are six total in this collection.

Titles from The Hobbit list of Plates from 2020 edition
  • "The Wargs"
  • "Smaug the Magnificent"
  • "Gandalf's Farewell"
  • "The Troll's See the Dawn"
  • "Bilbo at Bag-End"
  • "The Carrock"

Titles for the same pieces, taken from the Poster Collection rear flap:
  • "The Wargs"
  • "Smaug"
  • "At the Forest Gate"
  • "The Trolls"
  • "Bag End"
  • The Carrock"

My understanding, from talking with Alan, is that he doesn't give his pieces titles, but HarperCollins does name them in the "list of Plates" in the various editions.

Hi! Some recent acquisitions

"J.R.R. Tolkien, Scholar and Storyteller" was owned by Ursula Dronke, who wrote one of the essays included in the anthology. Some minor corrections are pencilled (by her?) in the pages containing her essay "Narrative Insight in Laxdaela Saga".

I need your help with this book, because it lacks the DJ. Does anyone have a scan of the DJ or a facsimile one? Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!
Mauro

Nice, that's a really nice piece. It won the Tolkien Society award for Artwork one year, if I'm not mistaken.....

I really lament that they stopped with art poster collections, though: it would have been great (wishful thinking on my part, and no more) to own a Silmarillion Poster Collection 2 (6 prints of the new images from the 2004 edition), as well as a Great Tales one - whether all 3 in one set (2 from each book), or dedicated releases.
