The book is without its original dust jacket and in need of restoration. However the book is complete including Tolkien’s hand tinted illustrations.

Don't think these hand tinted illustrations are by Tolkien.

That is quite high IMO

They are still out there for decent prices. I picked up this '55 HMCO Khaki variant recently for $200

If someone pays so much for an item, I would say they're a serious collector. And if they're a serious collector, I'd imagine they'd read this forum.

If someone pays so much for an item, I would say they're a serious collector. And if they're a serious collector, I'd imagine they'd read this forum.

You would imagine that a "serious collector" would know that they are severely overpaying (based on previous sales).

If I had to guess, I would guess that it is someone buying a gift for their spouse/partner/boyfriend/girlfriend etc. Maybe someone here with an upcoming birthday will soon be bestowed with this book...
