Every time one of these comes up for sale, I'm happily reminded of this crazy episode:

https://www.tolkienguide.com/modules/n ... php?topic_id=2843&start=0

that was amusing to read! Now I understand where comments on that seller come from.

Also, I was pretty sure this particular book wouldn't be available for long. I know it's very scarce but it's still a lot of money .

OK, I'll admit to buying this. Arrived this morning, and is indeed "as new". I already have a copy (also as new), but I'll probably keep this one (instead) by virtue of it being a lower number. I only really bought it because (a) it was in NZ, and (b) I knew a Tolkien dealer/vulture would pounce on it if I didn't. I'm of the feeling that leaving obvious food on their table is not in my best interests.

Nice catch. I would have bought it myself at this price if I didn’t already have a copy..

I'm looking for this for centuries, less than £700 for a fine condition copy, that was a bargain for sure !
I'm ready for waiting another 5 years :)

Books are like buses - none for ages and then two arrive at once! Hopefully you won't need to wait 5 more years!

Haha, yes, true but sometimes it depends of the line number

Might be of interest to some here (although I've heard not-so-good things regarding this seller):

This book is a 4th imp in a 5th imp DJ.
It seems really dishonnest from the seller to say in the description that it was common to re-use jackets.
It is true for some impressions in some cases, like the 4th impression of the Two Towers, which is often seen with a 3rd imp DJ (due to the higher amount of jackets (than the books) produced for the 3rd impr).
But regarding the FotR, I have always seen the 5th imp with a matching DJ.
I might be wrong of course, but this seller is known to affirm things that are not exactly true, to justify his really pricey listings...

The seller has sophisticated this copy (taking a dustjacket and a book and combining them into a single lot) so the wear/tear don't match between the two. At least, in this case, the seller has actually been up front about doing this: "We've been looking for a book to match this jacket with for some time."

[edit to add that I agree completely with what Emilien posted at the same time I was replying]

If you go back up thread just a tiny bit to the Silmarillion deluxe, Stu's "crazy episode" was exactly this seller (dogfark is Mark Faith).

That seller has done far worse with jackets....

The attached pictures were all taken from repeat listings of the same 3rd impression Hobbit. One would be correct if they thought the bottom two thirds of the spine never belonged to the book.

The final part of the jacket came from 4 different places, with the bulk of the spine from a later impression. The seller flat out denied doing this, despite the photographic evidence in his own listings. This was a book that had an £8000 asking price, and I have no doubt someone is now sitting on it, blissfully unaware.

I'm surprised you haven't got one. Genuine question - have you been looking and just never found a suitable copy or was it something that wasn't really on your radar in times past? Back when I bought my copy, they definitely weren't super hard to find, but like everything else they do seem to be a little scarce at the moment (as do all the illustrated deluxe editions in this style).
