Hi all, tolkienshop lists the following title Tolkien reads The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth as a CD-r. Have any of you bought this? Is it legal? Does it have art on the CD? Such little detail about it on that site.

Pretty sure this will be a burned CD in a generic jewel case. I bought the LotR Millennium edition CD from here and was very disappointed when it arrived as a plain white disc with printed artwork inserted and no liner notes (i.e., something I could have easily made myself at home). I could be wrong, though. Maybe email René to double check?

I can confirm Philomythos. I bought it some years ago and it's only a CD in a case, without sleeve ; I was really disappointed, but it's so rare that i didn't complained. I made myself a printing based on the cassette art.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm loathed to purchase items like this where someone can reproduce poor quality CD-r's yet HarperCollins and the Estate won't release such a hard to find recording.

I’d be surprised if the seller owns the copyright.

Of course he doesn't. Why would anyone think otherwise?

Well potentially he could have licensed it. I was just stating my assumption that he hasn't. It shouldn't be for the buyer to determine whether the material is inside or outside of copyright.
Personally, I have zero concern about people quietly sharing bootlegs of things that can't be purchased (this has been going on since the dawn of recording and I just don't care). I do have a problem with people selling them for a profit, though.

I agree with this too, and in fact a kind soul on this site shared the recording with me years ago when I was dying for a first listen. I understand people feeling the opposite though, it's not the most straightforward debate.
I happen to have an extra copy of the original cassette, happy to accept offers and pass it on for what I paid plus shipping (though it wasn't cheap).

My concern is not about copyright as I frankly could care less about it for an item like this. I just want to hear it to be honest.
My issue arises if the seller is selling a CD-r copy of the cassette recording which would then be a generation lower than the cassette. If I am buying a bootleg then I want to know.

Right, the fact that a buyer doesn't know what to expect is the main issue I think, yeah? It should be made clear in the description, otherwise it's deceptive.
