Arrived today totally unbumped despite Blackwells' totally inadequate packaging. Like BD do to NZ, it was bulk shipped and then the parcel forwarded. I doubt it would have held up to international travel if the parcel had come all the way as it was.

Really nice edition - lightyears better than the UK editions.

I agree as well, the UK trade edition could have been the same as this, my main complaint about the UK edition was the paper which this edition gets right.

The paper is lovely on this German edition. Really nice on the eye and to the touch.

Just got the new paperback box-set of The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings that was available on Amazon.co.uk for £10 including delivery. Thanks to remy for the tip.

Not sure if this was mentioned before, but the Hobbit is interesting in that it has 'different' illustrations to normal.

It contains the Black & White Hill from the 1937 first impression and three black and white versions of Tolkien's illustrations, Rivendell, Bilbo woke with the early sun in his eyes, Bilbo comes to the huts of the raft-elves and Conversation with Smaug.

These illustrations Nicolette Caven and I don't think they have been used before. The books seem to be selling well as my copy of The Hobbit is an 8th Impression.

I think that the black and white renditions of Tolkien's colour ones are the same which came out in a calendar some years ago.

They are reasonably close to the original and faithful to his style.

A good way of including these information-rich illustrations without incurring the cost of printing them in colour.

The medium of the originals makes it easier to do. It may be much more difficult to achieve with Tolkien's LotR drawings.

Interesting.
Could you check for me if they used the same "typeset" of the 2007 hardcover and 2011 paperback editions? In those a blank line separating paragraphs appeared between § 02.032 and 02.033 «Just when a wizard would...». In the 2020 illustrated hardcover this was correctly removed.

The extra blank line has also been removed in this paperback edition.

Still seems to be in the Kindle editions.

I recently received this book and thought some might find this interesting. It’s outside of my main Tolkien collecting focus, but seemed worth picking up. It’s an advance uncorrected proof of Beowulf…the HMH US 2014 issue.

Thanks!

Yes the epub2009 and epub2011 (enhanced) editions have it.

My little Oxford poetry 1915 has finally arrived and apart from the small lack on the cover (so fragile ... I will not talk about the packaging, my heart has jumped three times) the book is in good condition
