Grandpa gave the kids a 3D printer for Christmas, so it needs a test run to make sure I have it installed and configured correctly.

That looks really good. The main issue that I have heard with 3D printers is that you need a lot of patience

Yep, this (movie art) test piece took about 90 minutes to print. Did a nice job though!

I need one of these to print the spare parts for everything my 3 year-old keeps breaking...

You should try to find glow in the dark filament for your printer…rather cool results as you can see with the small dinosaur bone I scanned/replicated and 3D printed.

You could probably 3D print a glowing Balrog (with detachable wings)

How did you scan it? I see there are scanner apps for phones these days.

I use to have a Matter and Form 3D scanner for my laptop. It used a rotating turntable and stationary laser array to rotate and scan/measure the surface of the object. It was ok for small stuff.

Nice. I'm trying - and failing - to think of reasons I need one.

Test run number two - just practice again. This time took my logo, and converted text to curves to mesh.

Logo in Inkscape, mesh work in Blender (both free software).

I love the idea of scanning 3D objects, but that will wait until I upgrade my phone to one with LIDAR.
