I just got the Pictures of JRR Tolkien hardback with slipcase and there is an obvious error. I scanned other topics on the forum but did not see anything related so if I missed something, please feel free to redirect me.
Picture 47. Heraldic Devices has a labeled map of the devices on the left-hand page above CT's comments. The label that should read "Finrod Felagund" looks like it has been mostly erased with only a few outside traces of his name left. I'm not only curious as to what might cause this error, but how it might affect the value. As this edition is still available 2 months after it was issued I'm assuming it won't affect the value much, but thought I'd ask.

I think the entire print run has that issue.
Value-wise, it isn't a limited edition or anything, so it doesn't really have much in the way of monetary value -- certainly not at this point.

Likewise. Apparently an opaque white rectangular graphic block came to be positioned over the text there, causing the underlying text to be almost completely obscured.

Yes, agree with
Stu here. Value-wise misprints typically (with a small number of exceptions) bring down a book's value on the 2nd hand market rather than inflate it.

This appears in both the UK and the US first impressions - as far as I know, all copies of them. Not surprising, as they are printed by the same company from the same core files, with just the title page/copyright information and spine changed for the US copies.
A "feature" such as this would not affect the value in any significant way, I think. If there were some copies that were published without the error, and then the error slipped in (or conversely, if the first copies had the error, but then it was noticed and fixed), that could cause a difference in valuation in my mind.
Think of it this way - when this issue is corrected, that will be in the second print. Do we think the second print will have a higher value because this issue (and any others that might be found) is fixed? Is a second, corrected, printing ever worth more than a first print? I don't think the market bears that out. The first print is the first print, in this case, warts and all.

Are we sure HC knows about the error? No one has noticed it up until now, as far as I know...

I had previously seen it mentioned, but I can't remember where. Wasn't here. Likely no one has mentioned it to HC, mind.

Same here - saw it somewhere else, but can't remember where (thought it was here, but no evidence). I'll leave it to
Trotter to bring up with HC I think.
