Review of The Great Tales Never End: Essays in memory of Christopher Tolkien (2022)

"The information here confirms what I had previously heard but in confidence, and was implied by some remarks in a memoir; that Christopher's academic career was hampered and delayed by his third class bachelor's degree, when a first class was usually expected and required "

Well, I outperformed CT in one area, then!!!! I remember when I was doing my degree, a third was regarded as worse than just not bothering to do honours at all. He did well to recover from that.

I just read chapter 4, The son behind the father.. Given the book was originally intended to be published while Christopher was alive, I do wonder if it would have irked him or if he would have considered the conclusions "a fair assessment"? Enjoyable chapter.

I am waiting for my copy to arrive. I have seen some posts from Brian Sibley, Ted Nasmith and Carl Hostetter about their contribution to the book. Looking forward to reading it !

It is genuinely a good book. Slightly random in content (as you would expect for this kind of volume), but that's probably a good thing - as there is probably something for everyone in there. The sections I have read have all been of a high quality and not just "an essay for the sake of writing an essay", which does plague the Tolkien field more than some.

The review is as long as the book. He makes a very valid point about Ferré's lack of mentioning Guy Kay. I thought that was odd.
