Noted fantasy author Gene Wolfe wrote a tribute essay about J. R. R. Tolkien and
The Lord of the Rings which I quite enjoyed reading. It was first published in 2001 in the magazine
Interzone, and was reprinted with permission on the following website:

IIRC it was printed somewhere before Interzone - I'll dig out my Interzone copy and see what it says.

Andy Robertson from Interzone mentions that the "essay was offered by Mr Wolfe to the anthology Meditations on Middle-Earth, edited by Karen Haber, but was rejected."
Perhaps that is what you are thinking of? I don't have the Interzone edition, so if there is more information in that article I would like to know!

I certainly have an Interzone article by Gene Wolfe about Tolkien, which I think is this one - I will dig it out, although it may have to wait a few days.
