"Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" film and merchandise rights owner Middle-earth Enterprises (recently acquired by Embracer Group) has formally asked Warner Bros. to amicably exit the pair of Middle-earth franchises by the end of 2023 with the goal to pave the way for the rights to be sold to a new owner.
This looks like a good day for Hollywood lawyers.

I think I heard it, all the way from Hollywood as lawyers weeped with joy. Luxury car sales are up, it's a win win.
But in all seriousness, this will be messy if WB tell them to take a running jump.

I think WB might...they're not going to give it up that easy.

The issue WBDiscovery have is they are in enormous financial trouble. They can't conceivably make anything new from this license than what is already in production and obviously that's a big problem to Embracer who won't get much of a return on their biggest asset from the purchase of MEE. WBD may well hold out for a payout from Embracer.

How is this different from before? Weren't Zaentz already making the claim that WB's rights had expired prior to the sale to Embracer Group?

MEE were claiming that WB had not kept to the license agreement iirc. This sounds very much like Embracer are basically saying "Do the right thing and ket it go". Yet they have that animated movie in production.

Can they take the rights away from Amazon?
I rather them not butcher Tolkien's legacy any further.

No, as Embracer have no control over TV rights, these belong to the Tolkien Estate.

Tolkien's legacy is just fine
I see this a lot on Twitter and you must all think that Tolkien is very delicate if a TV show could do him any lasting damage.

Tolkien's legacy only grows with the passing of time
No adaptation however good or bad can change that.
