So, by that account there are actually two volumes of the quintet "missing"; and I know a lot of readers of the first three volumes didn't go on to read the other two, which are not I think as highly regarded, generally speaking, as the first three. In any event, these may have been signed in person at some appearance and may have been all the collector had in hand at the time.

Hello, a few months back my brother, TolkienBookBoy68, was posting about selling our father's Tolkien collection and I've now joined to try to help with the process. Unfortunately, like him, I know very little about Tolkien, but I've read the past discussions to try to catch myself up on the progress he's already made. As proof I'm attaching a picture I took of one of the books he shared, Songs for the Philologists, as well as one of The Hobbit copies I saw someone point out as rare with one of the bookcases in the background.

I saw recommendations of both auction houses and dealers selling on consignment, and I'm trying to figure out what people who know better than us would think is the better option between the two. I can see the appeal of an auction house, but would working with an expert dealer make the process smoother for sellers who aren't too knowledgeable? I'm also wondering which might reach a wider audience since I would want more people to have the opportunity to buy whatever books they might've always wanted to own and possibly finish their own collections.
