Thanks, all, for your answers about the illustrations. I was also hoping for pencil sketches like in 'The Children of Hurin', etc, but this seems not to be the case. Nevertheless, this looks like a superb edition!

I also had also expected "pencil drawings" to be sketches when I read the sales blurb. Folio described what HarperCollins appear to be referring to as pencil drawings as "chapter openers", which feels a little less misleading. That's assuming, of course, that there are not some other pencil drawings that haven't been mentioned or shown in the unboxing.

Hello! Quick question, what are the measures and weight of the box? I can't find them anywhere online (i mean the big cardboard box we saw in the streaming) and I'd like to know that in order to use sth like forward2me or similar.

Thanks in advance,

In the video he said it weighed ‘about 9 lbs’ (or that’s what the shipping info on it said.)

The HarperCollins provided cardboard box (not meant for shipping) is 11.5" x 8" x 5.5" (~30 cm x 21 cm x 14cm). The weight is 8 lb 2oz (~3.7 kg) in that box - so packing material will make it larger and heavier.

It appears the standard number of Alan Lee LR illustrations for deluxe edition will be 61. The additional 11 are: The Black Rider, *The Bridge of Khazad-dûm, *Lothlórien, *The Falls of Rauros, Helm's Deep, *Minas Morgul, *Gandalf and Pippin, Attack on the City, *Éowyn and the Witch-king, *The Scouring of Shire, *The Grey Havens. I believe the * items have appeared in the Folio edition, the other 3 might be new.

I have created a PDF showing the plates and colour illustrations in this edition, the Folio edition, the 2020 trade hardbacks and the 1992 Deluxe edition.

Isn't Folio's "The Pass of Caradhras" a different art? I think "Homeward Bound" and "The Scouring of the Shire" are also two different arts, the latter replaced the former in the Folio edition.

So if I undertsand correctly, the only brand new, 'never before seen' illustrations in any previous edition are only 3, which are the removable art cards and cover illustrations of each of the 3 books from the 70th anniv. deluxe edition:

The Black Rider,
Helm's Deep,
Attack on the City

Plus the fact that the pencil drawings are the chapters heads drawn for the Folio Society edition, enlarged a bit, drives me a bit disapointed about the real new Alan Lee's material of this edition.
At least we will have full page enlarged versions of the 3 cover illustrations of the FS.
