New Release: Limited Edition of The Hobbit from The Folio Society

An Interview with The Folio Society and Alan Lee

One of our most highly anticipated releases of the year is the limited edition of The Hobbit, a follow up to the beautiful limited set of The Lord of the Rings from Folio Society, released back in 2022. In this interview we delve into the creation of this long-awaited special edition, a breathtaking collaboration between The Folio Society and the renowned Tolkien illustrator, Alan Lee. As one of the most beloved works of fantasy, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit has captivated generations of readers with its rich storytelling and expansive world-building. We are so grateful for the opportunity to sit down with the Head of Editorial at Folio Society, James Rose, as well as Alan Lee, whose stunning illustrations have become synonymous with Tolkien's legendarium. We hope you enjoy the interview and learning more about this special edition and the lovely people who created it!

On the art side of things, 2 new paintings and 2 reworked ? And the previously published paintings ?

From what I can see there are three new images, one of the cover, another of the frontispiece and the separate poster. And two more retouched images, am I right?

I so agree. Further frustration what with being a regular Folio Society buyer and will have to join the lottery of people trying to buy a copy including many dealers who will immediately sell on for a profit having zero interest in the book. I think in some ways it is a shame that the Folio Society are not selling this in January onwards when people flipping the book for profit will be hit with a tax bill demanding payment later next year. But in saying that, good luck to anyone genuinely interested. Yes indeed, the modern Age sadly.

I'm not sure it could be anything other than a lottery given Folio no longer has a membership model. Hopefully they do restrict purchases to one or two per buyer. That said, I think anyone who wants one will likely get one if they are quick about it. LotR took 24 hours. I think this will likely sell out faster than LoTR due to obvious flippability (which wasn't a given with LoTR). If I'm quick enough to get one, great, and if not - it is just a book...

Yep,FS stopped the membership model. Last time withe the LOTR the FS website crashed and it was chaotic.I was lucky to get one in the stampede and i was in at the beginning. Unless they improve things this time will be worse

There was no problem at all later on - I bought my copy on the second day, and the website worked fine at that point. And like I say, just a book (and we don't even know how absurd the price is going to be as yet).
