Thank you all. I did purchase the Author-illustrated non-deluxe version and it is beautiful. I'm very happy with the printing quality, paper, and binding. The only issue is that it is larger and less comfortable in the hand than the smaller single volume sets. I love having the author illustrations in my collection, but it also doesn't feel "pure" reading with images that JRRT didn't feel were ready for publication.
As far as post-2020 boxed or 3-volume sets, it seems options are limited. I purchased one mass market WM version with a 2025 printing but found out it still uses the 1994 text version. Printing is also poor. Oops... I also thought (incorrectly) that the 60th anniversary text had a 2014 revision. Am I correct in understanding that the 2020/2021 revision was the next sequential revision after the 2005 revision?
For 3-volume sets, is this WM set the only "standard" 3-volume set with the newer text?
I assume the new (blue, 2024) deluxe illustrated edition and the other Alan Lee illustrated editions of Hobbit plus LOTR (2020 HC and 2025 WM) would each have the updated text as well? I do want to add a set of Alan Lee illustrations to my rapidly growing collection. Thanks again.
