I am trying to find out the first editions of the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion that were printed in Australia.

The earliest (Printed in Australia) I have found so far are as follows:

Hobbit:

1987 - 50th Anniversary Paperback

Lord of the Rings:

2001 LOTR One Vol Film Tie-In Paperback
or
2001 LOTR One Vol Paperback (with Howe Cover)

Silmarillion:

1991 Grafton Paperback

Anyone know of any earlier "Printed in Australia" editions? I know there is the 1991 SuperDeluxe LOTR (Australian Edition Limited to 200) - but printed in Hong Kong

Not the earliest (probably, though may tie with the ones you mention), but the 1st Australian print of the Collins Modern Classics LotR three volume from 2001 was printed in Australia (Griffin Press).

Many thanks Berelach, Stu. Much appreciated.

Another couple to look out for!

All good. I would not be surprised if there are further examples. A later example that comes to mind is the 1st impression of the 2009 S&G hardback for the Australian market (black boards instead of brown) -- this was also printed by Griffin Press. I didn't personally note any AU/NZ market hardbacks after that edition, but I don't follow paperbacks very closely, so quite possible there were some further examples.

There us a hardback Wyatt Hobbit (2001) that was produced specifically for one of the booksellers in AU (Dymocks, I believe), which *may* also be a Griffin Press printing. I don't have an example to verify as mine is the normal UK edition.

Stu,

Do you think it might have been "Angus & Robertson" - not Dymnocks?

Yes, I think you are right. Closing my eyes and thinking, it was definitely A&R, not Dymocks (those two retailers were the main book chains in Australia at the time)

At least some copies were supplied with a label stating they were an Angus & Robertson exclusive. I saw one on eBay Australia last year that retained the label on the cover (but didn't buy it).

Yes - I have a vague memory of the Label (from about 15 years ago when I saw one on eBay - that I did not purchase). Been looking for one the past few years without success so far.....

I see Griffin Press is still going, though it's not based in Netley any more (this is a suburb of my home city, so it was fun to see it named in a Tolkien book).
