One of the least helpful titles I've ever seen for a copy of The Lord of the Rings on eBay: "Book"

Another eBay seller that regularly extracts the urine. 9th impression. Sigh. Would be daft for a 1st.

Agreed, that asking price is borderline predatory.
The seller stated that they got it appraised by a local rare book seller, hence the price. That is much much more than I would expect a book sellers appraisal to beJlong wrote:
That's absurdly overpriced IMO.

Dealers can say anything they want, eBay is filled with absurdity and dishonesty, and they make no attempt to police it at all. Even if they actually did get it appraised and are being truthful about the price quoted, just because someone is a rare book dealer doesn’t guarantee they know the Tolkien market.
The description isn’t much better than that absurd price: “This is a true HOLY GRAIL for the hardcore fans of Tolkien and his work! A hardcover review copy of his final work The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays WITH the original review card and letter from the publisher. everything is in amazing condition minus the minor scuffs of the blue paint on the dust jacket. There are no tears or rip anywhere to be found and is now wrapped in a protective plastic to prevent any further wear on the paint. The review card and letter from the publisher list the original publication date as well as details regarding this work, they even have the original publisher contact information listed as well. I have the letter and review card safely secured in an envelope to prevent any damage to the ink or paper as well as the book.”
That DJ is quite damaged.
