/s is short-type for sarcasm, the same way lol is for laugh out loud. Its been around since the early World of Warcraft days. No one is claiming the seller is doing anything, it was a joke.
Still, lesson learned. I won't post anything similar in the future.Halbarad wrote:

Thank you. We appreciate that.

Visitors who look at the site without paying much attention could conceivably misunderstand, or like I, don't use this 'short-type' and misunderstood the intention. Granted, had I been playing World of Warcraft I might have known what it meant.
Members are welcome to join us over on Discord where we can throw around sarcasm to our hearts desire. Here however, we keep things simpler so that visitors can best judge an item, a seller, or publication.
Thanks Luckyshot. I realized afterwards what you were aiming at.

Where? 6-7 years ago I didn't snag a 5th US Print for $475 and I haven't seen one for under $1k since. I got my 11th (with DJ) for about $150 2-3 years ago. US 10th for $10 even you have to know was a steal. I'm not doubting you, I'm just willing to travel!Pulch wrote:
Really?? I purchased my 2nd ed 1st state in slightly worse condition for $250 earlier this year. I also found an 11th for $120 and a US 10th for $10
Found it on Etsy of all places. The other two were eBay
Jealous! Sometimes people don't know what they have and whoever sees it first wins. Sounds like you have great timing!Pulch wrote:

The problem in this case was in the ambiguity. It looked very much like there was a claim being made that the seller had stated the item was signed by Tolkien, with the "/s" meaning: "What an idiot to try and make that claim!". The meaning that was actually intended by the OP took a bit of mental gymnastics - it was only obvious to me that was what was meant after looking through the listing to see what claims had been made by the seller (none), to see this intended meaning (by ruling out the more obvious one).
I think when potentially impugning a seller, it is important to be a bit more careful. Put it this way, there is a lot of stuff I will say about specific sellers that I won't put in writing here, unambiguously or otherwise.
All that said, bloody overpriced!

I'm still upset at missing the $5 NZD 1946 Hobbit in nice clean dustjacket that a guy picked up in a bookshop here on South Island a couple of years back. Still close to the best Tolkien deal I have seen!
