No one else will be daft enough to put so much effort into a 1971 BCA!

First rule of Tolkien Guide, the member is always correct 😝😅

To be fair, I'm going to be daft enough to do this twice - as I need to do the other BCA 1971 state as well!

It's all good clean fun and I happen to think that even for a lower value book, these add a cool extra layer to enjoy.

Exactly. The labour of love shineth. You know and you display you know in your craft. You have elvish blood along with the twisted twirlies varieties. Keep 'em coming.

Yeah. I'm trying to create an art-piece that has the advantage of being protective, but makes the book itself more enjoyable for me (with these red spines, them being stuck in a drawer so they don't fade away isn't that enjoyable!)

I would say they would not really be economic to produce for inexpensive books like this BCA (which is really why no one that I am aware of sells custom clams for these kinds of books).

It might be worth it for my copy of it though....

Indeed, I think your copy probably would justify it! :)

Tackling the big-boy - 1963 Deluxe LotR set.

Just doing the trays initially (black rayon, with a felt liner and recessed ribbon). I will probably need to outsource the printing for the box outer, as I likely won't get good enough black levels for the outer if I try and print on cloth. I don't really like those clams that split the triptych into 3, so I'll either be finding a better way or doing something completely different. I have a few ideas going from easy to probably hard!

Clamshell for the 1963 (or 1964, depending on your counting).

Thought about doing an outer wrap that was just a facsimile of the original slipcase (as I already did all the digital work on that years ago), but in the end, decided to do something that was more interesting to me (given I have made facsimile slipcases with the original art in the past for a couple of members here and for my "B" set).

A well-worn 1957 German 1st edition (with illustrations by Horus Engels). The book itself is pretty tidy, but the jacket has seen some action in its 69 years (but at least it is present). I almost bought one years ago and then opted not to as I had just spent some money on another book. Always regretted that, as I think the jacket design is the best after Tolkien's own.
