(I know we see these every so often, but it still upsets me each time I see one. Great way to ruin a perfectly good copy)

That is now such a sad destroyed book. If you want people to scribble in your book with a sharpie, please use a cheap new paperback :)

At least it isn't actually a rare book in this case. Still a shame, as is any pointless destruction of a book.
I must admit I consider actor sigs to be fairly worthless at the best of times. That said, I did just buy a crappy ex-lib HarperCollins hardback RotK with a John Rhys Davies signature and dedication in it. It was only 30 NZD (£13), though -- which is about that it was worth as bit of NZ nostalgia! I can probably flip it and make a profit of £7. Might need to wait until the 50th anniversary of the movies to get a buyer, mind, so more likely will be a stocking filler for my boy.
