The 13 1 hour episode version was first broadcast in 1987 on BBC Radio 4 on Sundays at 2.30 pm from 8th of March to the 31st of May. I probably still have these on tapes recorded from the radio, but god knows where they are...

That was a repeat. They were first broadcast in 13 episodes from 17th July to 9th October 1982.

I still have 'em in the loft on Maxell tapes in boxes with inlays that I printed on dot-maxtrix. Was a ritual recording them each Sunday lunchtime in 1982.

I am quite old, and I feel older even than that. Sigh.

The funny thing with the LoTR recordings is that my Dad's radio-cassette used to make a loud interference noise every few minutes, so that was on the recordings. When I listen to the mp3s taken from the CDs, I still "hear" a loud buzz at some of the same points. I listened to my cassettes SO many times. I owe Brian Sibley a debt of gratitude for this adaptation.

I still have recordings from the radio when I was a kid that had talk over the ends of songs and still to this day can't listen to some songs without feeling that something is missing.

Something is indeed missing. The time that once was.

My homemade real time capture recordings were 14X 60min cassettes with single episode on each side and inserted into the cases were cut out clippings with the Radio Times listings,including the cast and brief synopsis. These contained in a sturdy shoe box painted on the outside by my own illustrations. The Radio Series was important at the time,special even,and remains so. My mother has the repeated 60minute episodes in a smaller shoe box on longer cassettes.
