Happy Spring everyone!

It's the first of the month and that means that I have updated the Calendar of the Month feature on my website. April's calendar is a rarity and particular favorite. Recent updates may be found under "What's New on this Website?" You may view it all at:

www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendars

Hope you enjoy it! Best to all.

Check out this eBay auction and see if you can figure out why it was not accepted as the cover of the 1980 Tolkien calendar!

I have some sketches for this work by Hickman... I bought those a long time ago and always loved them. It is always unusual to find drawings of any artist and especially Sauron and Morgoth are not much drawn. Looking forward towards the art by Alan Lee for Children of Hurin!

Hi Beren -

Did you catch the error?

Do you mean TOLKEIN... or do you mean something else... Sauron versus Morgoth?

I loved the misspelling of Tolkien, but Sauron (which I am not sure Hickman was actually rendering, I think that may just be the eBay auctioner's idea) looks a bit mousy rather than menacing.

Anyone able to read the inscription above his head?

I love that moustache...looks like a hint to Tevildo!

Actually I do have the sketches for this work and it is written in the back of the paper... 'Morgoth'... so I always thought Hickmann was trying to draw Morgoth. But then he does not have a crown with three silmarils and why is he holding a palantiri...

But i like the moustache!

It is almost inconcievable, but apparently not imposible, that he could mispell Tilkeon (hee hee!)

It is assuredly Sauron. The Palantir (from Minas Ithil) aside, he has only four fingers on his left hand. But how evil could he be if he has cat's whiskers! Nice kitty!

I will leave the deciphering of the text above his head to my betters.
