THE INKLINGS ARCHIVES

A series of audio CDs has been produced of talks given at Church House, Westminster relating to the group of writers who formed the ‘Inklings’: C S Lewis, J R R Tolkien, Charles Williams, and other writers who influenced them, including George MacDonald. The recordings were made by Nigel Sustins, then Manager of Church House Bookshop. Each CD is 70-75 minutes in length.

Archive 2. ‘Facets of Tolkien’ contains talks given on 16th September 1977, to mark the publication of ‘The Silmarillion’.
[Track 1] Priscilla Tolkien, the Professor’s daughter;
[Track 2] Humphrey Carpenter,Tolkien’s biographer.
The other two recordings on this CD are from a meeting on 3rd October 1980, organised to celebrate the publication of ‘Unfinished Tales’.
[Track 3] Rayner Unwin, Tolkien’s publisher, discussing future plans to issue new Tolkien material;
[Track 4] Rayner Unwin answering questions.

The Inklings Archives are produced in a limited edition of 100 sets. ‘Facets of Tolkien’ is authenticated by a photograph of the signatures in a copy of ‘The Silmarillion’ (Priscilla Tolkien, Humphrey Carpenter, Rayner Unwin, two of Tolkien’s granddaughters and Pauline Baynes, the artist, all of whom were present at the event), each photograph bearing the number of the copy and initialled by Nigel Sustins. The recordings were made on tape (up to 30 years old) but have been converted to digital format and transferred to CD, and any deficiency is more than made up for by the unique and historic nature of the material. To protect any copyright the recordings should be used only for educational or private purposes, and must not be copied, played in public or re-sold.

Please note: the Tolkien Society in Britain is selling other versions of the Tolkien material, but not in limited editions.

Each CD costs GBP 15.00, post free worldwide (payment from outside the UK must be made by PayPal). Also available on Abebooks.com and Amazon UK (the latter make a postage charge).

Thanks for posting this! Do you have any further information on what is different between this edition and the copies being sold by the TS?

Also, after putting a note in with Nigel, I am going to also buy #1, #3 and #4.

#1 contains a recording of Donald Swann performing "Bilbo's Last Song" in addition to a lot of interesting material on CS Lewis.

#3 contains Humphrey Carpenter talking about his book The Inklings and interviewing R E ("Humphrey") Havard, physician to Lewis and Tolkien, and one of the original "Inklings".

#4 contains Tom Shippey discussing Tolkien.

#5 does not contain any Tolkien related materials, but still looks interesting (George MacDonald focus.)

The Tolkien Society are selling unlimited editions of the Tolkien material. Their first disc is identical to 'Facets of Tolkien;'; their second disc contains Tom Shippey (from 'Archives 4.), Humphrey Carpenter/Dr Havard (from 'Archives 3.) and an extra short talk by Barbara Strachey which is only found on the TS disc.

There are six 'Inklings Archives' in total. The TS releases (of which there are only two; covering only Tolkien) are essentially the same except they are stand alone releases (there is no suggestion of there being six); also simply called 'Church House Archives' (see TSTrading catalogue).

Facets of Tolkien (Inklings Archive #2; same title) is identical in both formats. Tolkien & the Inklings by TS incorporates Carpenter & Shippey from two seperate 'Inklings Archives' (#3 & #4); it also includes a recording of Barbara Strachey (Author of Journeys of Frodo...) not included in any of the six 'Inklings Archives'.

'Inklings Archives' #1, #5 & #6 contain no specific Tolkien related material (#2 is exclusively Tolkien; #3 & #4 contain some Tolkien material as mentioned above).

Additionally, the 'Inklings Archives' are limited in number (TS releases are not). Contact Nigel Sustins for more details; & for another very interesting item...

I'll add that Nigel just sent me the contents of #6 - as Khamul mentions, it is not Tolkien related. The title is MUSICAL FACETS OF LEWIS - two musical performances of Lewis' fiction (Perelandra and LW&W).

There is also the following CD available from Nigel that is not a part of the Inklings Archives:

(Seriously, the Estate is now on Nigel's tail!)

Of course Deagol had this one noted on www.tolkienbooks.net January update...

When I bought this I was asked to keep it a secret, but Nigel has put the secret recording mentioned earlier in these posts on Ebay, which puts it in the public domain.

It is limited to 10 copies (2 must be left) and I thought it was definitely one of the most interesting recordings from The Inklings Archives.

Microphones in Middle-Earth

'Microphones in Middle-Earth', a CD of talks given at Church House, Westminster, in March 1981, on the BBC radio dramatisation of Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings'. Speakers are: Brian Sibley and Michael Bakewell, co-adapters; Penny Leicester, co-producer; Stephen Oliver, composer; David Collings, actor (Legolas), and Peter Woodthorpe, actor (Gollum). The original recording was made by Nigel Sustins, then Manager of Church House Bookshop (on tape, converted to digital format).
