There is a good colour reproduction of one of the signed maps on the back cover of Profiles in History Autoraph Catalog 39
I was looking through the Beyond Bree List of Tolkienalia again today, and saw the following additional Tolkien/Baynes items listed:
Page 53
- The Tolkien Society
Sweatshirt: Farmer Giles of Ham 40th Anniversary by Pauline Baynes, beige on royal blue. £13 / $22.55.
Centenary sweatshirt, black w red dragon by Pauline Baynes, adult & child sizes. $20.25, $26.35.
Mug: ... Centenary mug, black w red dragon by Pauline Baynes, $5.65.
[presumably the same dragon design on the sweatshirt and the mug - Jeremy]
Page 54
- George Allen and Unwin
Tolkien cards: Hobbit Series II has one card - "There and Back Again" by Pauline Baynes based on the Hobbit Map.
- The Marion E Wade Center
Postcard: The Dwarves crossing the Misty Mountains, by Pauline Baynes; The Hobbit cover, 1961 Puffin edition, colour. Mostly blue-blacks and yellows.
That's all I could find... anyone have the postcard?
Jeremy

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread. I have caught the bug again with Pauline Baynes art. The Blackwell's catalog is completely sold, no surprise there I suppose. My question was about the poster map from 1970. Does anyone know the true first state of that map? A quick google search turned up at least 6 different copyright versions with a 1970 date.
Thanks,
Chris
Thanks,
Chris

According to Hammond P369, Eii4 the first state would seem to be the Private Printing of 50 Copies - as it states "50 copies..... followed by 7,500 copies ..... as the normal trade edition"
Hello,
Sorry I need to be more specific. How does one tell the first printing based on the copyright line? I am not really expecting to find an example of these super early/signed versions but wouldn't mind the first state of the mere mortals edition. Here is what I managed to find from old sales records. The top one was listed as a rare, early state (perhaps the 50 you mention)?

The first UK poster (which you do not have pictured) measures 50cm x 73cm (19.5” x 28 3/4”) according to the Beyond Bree List of Tolkienalia. The first American poster is 24” x 36.5”
The top one of your pictures is the first American poster - “New map of Middle-Earth”
All of your pictures that have a sequence of numbers ending in “250” are American. The ones with ISBNs starting with “0 04” are British, though I am certain the first 1970 posters didn’t have that.

Thank you. I am guessing the reference you are using is NOT online. Google doesn't help much here either.

The private printing of 50 states "First printing issued privately" in place of "First Trade Printing 1970" on the bottom green border.
