I have updated the 1st edition U.S. Silmarillion's article with the latest sale.
U.S. Silmarillions
First post updated with the results.
Some big numbers, especially the first Hobbit for $360,000 ($450,000 wt bp). I was very surprised how cheaply the US Lord of the Rings went for. Two of the volumes are signed, plus a typed signed letter went for $65,000 ($81,250 wt buyers premium). I felt that one was very cheap.

I was very surprised with the 1937 Hobbit given that it wasn’t signed. The second print was about where I thought it would be

Agreed some very big numbers here. This isn’t collecting, it’s value storing.
On the other hand, I too was surprised by some of the lower numbers and a couple of letters going unsold. The minimums hurt the auction house on some these, probably.
I am not so sure of this. I think we might also be seeing the big general book collectors targetting high-end tolkien. There is no lack of bibliophiles who can spend $100000 on a book and not notice it on their account. The recent heritage auction saw many classics going for the expected prices with buyers definately knowing their stuff. Some authors broke the mold though and tolkien led that race. It was also interesting following the Herbert items.
