Do the books themselves have new copyright statements or anything Stu? The original set had first impressions (2002) of the standard hardbacks, but the set was re-released in 2011 according to HarperCollins. I don't know if you have the original set, is the slipcase (or anything else) exactly the same? What impressions are in your set?

The slipcases are not absolutely identical. It is very similar, but the reprint box is thinner, particularly on the top/bottom. It really isn't robust enough for three heavy books, in my opinion.
Impressions are 6,5 and 5. No new copyright statement (bears the original 2002).
I wouldn't recommend anyone who has the original bothering to get the reprint, but it is an adequate substitute for someone who hasn't got the earlier one. I think I paid AUD $160 shipped from Book Depository when the reprint was released, so same ballpark price to the eBay one.
This is an interesting book, very different illustrations from what what you may have seen before, my favourite is the Balrog and I can even excuse the wings
Absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Tolkien, but have a look at this strange auction...
Seller: "WHETHER THESE ARE ORIGINAL OR FILM PROPS I HAVE NO IDEA..."! What!?

I forgot to say: thanks, Stu, for sharing a link to that first Bookpeople Hobbit -- I bought it (seller relisted it as buy-it-now).

Yes he did, and in doing so broke ebay rules on ending an auction when people were bidding on it
I don't know why ebay have any rules at all, they do not enforce any of them.

"You might end your listing early because:
The item is no longer available for sale. (Please note that you shouldn't list an item on eBay if there's a chance you'll sell it elsewhere before the listing ends.)"
Morgan, not at all cross with you, well done paying £5 for this
It's ebay and the seller that I am not happy with.
Update: Seller reported to ebay and a case is being opened against them.
I should say that I only asked if the seller could change to international shipping. S/he then suggested to change to a fixed price, which I agreed upon -- the auction had no bids by then, IIRC. Strangely enough, the seller didn't relist the auction until some days later, when a bid had been placed. I thought it was kind of odd -- but what to do? Sorry for stepping on your toes, Trotter: it wasn't my intention!
