Tolkien - on AbeBooks.com[/url]

A very good clean unmarked copy of this exceedingly scarce volume of the Huddersfield dialect. With 6pp. Foreword by J.R.R. Tolkien nine years before the Hobbit was published. Bound in original maroon cloth as issued and gilt titles to spine that has some minor wear. 166p including a list of subscribers. This volume contains the six page Foreword by JRRT. Here Tolkien discusses the compilation of glossaries and the development of the English language in the north of England. See pp.xiii-xviii. In his preface, Walter Haigh thanks Tolkien: "In the first place, I would sincerely thank Professor J.R.R. Tolkien, formerly Professor in Leeds University, now Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford. Not only has he almost from the first shown his warm approval of the work, and befriended me with ever-ready advice and encouragement throughout, but he has also generously contributed a valuable Foreword to the Glossary." A scholarly exploration of the dialect of this area of West Yorkshire, which the author describes as "probably the most isolated" area of this Pennine region. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. Ha Ha, it was me. Thanks, Jeremy.

FWIW, I went to Huddersfield University, and it has always been on my to buy list. A couple of years ago they were quite common (including a copy for under £100), but have been a bit more scarce lately, so thought I had best jump in and buy.

It is an interesting book, as Tolkien was editing this either at the same time as coming up with ideas and writing The Hobbit, or a few years earlier. I like to look for words that in The Hobbit, such as gaffer and baggins

Turned up today. FWIW, it was the state that does not have the coat of arms on the front board. No idea if that is first or second (and quite possibly no one does).

Edit: There is toning to the end-papers that is indicative of where the dust jacket was originally present.
