A very good clean unmarked copy of this exceedingly scarce volume of the Huddersfield dialect. With 6pp. Foreword by J.R.R. Tolkien nine years before the Hobbit was published. Bound in original maroon cloth as issued and gilt titles to spine that has some minor wear. 166p including a list of subscribers. This volume contains the six page Foreword by JRRT. Here Tolkien discusses the compilation of glossaries and the development of the English language in the north of England. See pp.xiii-xviii. In his preface, Walter Haigh thanks Tolkien: "In the first place, I would sincerely thank Professor J.R.R. Tolkien, formerly Professor in Leeds University, now Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford. Not only has he almost from the first shown his warm approval of the work, and befriended me with ever-ready advice and encouragement throughout, but he has also generously contributed a valuable Foreword to the Glossary."
