Wow... impressive.

That seems quite high for two books that are second impressions.

A search for recent sales seems to say that second impressions are drawing good prices...

I couldn't find any recent Two Towers 2nd impressions that sold, but given printing runs, they are probably drawing similar prices.

Well, I wouldn't pay that kind of money for second impressions.

How about the rest of the collectors on this forum? Would you pay that kind of money?

Based on the last year or two, I would be hard pressed to find a nice copy with dustjacket of either FR or TT for $800-1000 (£500-700 or so).

It is very economical compared to first impressions if one is trying to have a set from year of issue (or so - 2nd impression TT is January 1955).

I still think that buyer overpaid for that set. I just don't see second impressions as all that desirable.

Case in point: here's a Two Towers VG condition copy with DJ (1st, 2nd) on Abebooks for $585.92 right now https://affiliates.abebooks.com/c/9724 ... Dsnippet-_-srp1-_-title15

Also, here's a Return of the King 1st,1st that sold for $950 in April of this year:

All this to say, with some work, I think a set like that could have been found for less. If you take these two copies and combine the cost with that Fellowship you posted above for about $950, you are only looking at about $2,500. I think a comparable set to the one in the auction could be found for $3,000 with some patience and work--maybe even less with a bit of luck. But not everyone enjoys the "hunt"...

Of course, I don't see the point of 1st, 2nds in my collecting endeavors; I think I'd rather have a 1st, 1st without a DJ.

That AbeBooks listing says
352pp. 8vo. Original cloth, in rubbed dustwrapper, neat tape repair to backstrip, lacks some text. Coloured folding map in fine condition. Offsetting to endpapers. A very good copy. Second impression. Bookseller Inventory # 137803

I wonder how much text is missing... Certainly not a desirable copy at anywhere near that price!
