Two books of which Tolkien owned copies (but the Etymological Dictionary shown is an American edition, not English). These also were free discards, included here for interest although only the dictionary is a reference book and neither is about Tolkien or the Inklings.

Here is Current Biography for 1967, which is even older than the old grey cat, Will, who appears in the first picture. The entry on Tolkien appears on four pages, so I have photographed just his picture.

The library discarded its set of the Dictionary of National Biography -- 29 volumes through the supplement covering 1961-1970. (One volume seems to have been missing, the one with names beginning with Q, when the set was discarded; I don't know who took it, but I have a suspect.) I took the 28 volumes once they were discarded, and bought the missing one plus four supplements 1971-1980, 1981-1985, 1896-1990, and Missing (often female) Persons. None of these five volumes that I bought to complete the set was expensive.

The series is now subsumed with the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, which has digital updates every month (?). The ODNB was published as 60 volumes in 2004, but I'm not sure it will continue to be available as a book.

Anyway, here is the volume in which the entry on Tolkien, written by Humphrey Carpenter, appeared.

The Bleiler Guide was a library discard, but one taken by a friend of mine and given to me -- not a discard from the library I've been drawing on in this series. It's an oversize book -- a familiar paperback included inthe photo for scale.

If Bleiler's name sounds familiar but you can't place it -- he edited a bunch of books reprinted by Dover, in the fields of science fiction, fantasy, and supernatural fiction.

Really enjoying this thread, keep them coming, Dale! What great fortune to get these books for free.

The library discarded four volumes in green cloth -- Illustrators of Children's Books 1744-1945; and volumes for 1946-1956, 1957-1966, and 1967-1976. All were published from Boston by The Horn Book. So far as I know, no further volumes were issued. Here is the 1957-1966 volume.

Here's its entry on Pauline Baynes, which has a little more than the Baynes entry in the 1946-1956 volume where she appeared earlier.
