Since the local university is discarding most of its reference books, I have been looking out for volumes with entries on Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and other authors of interest. I expect to post some pictures of finds here. The content in question may be just a few hundred words, and the discarded books are likely to have seen considerable use if they date to the decades in which professors assigned heavy amounts of library work. However, if the discarded books in question are free -- one merely needs to take them from carts of discarded books -- or inexpensive from dealers, they can be a niche specialty for impecunious collectors. The books' material about hundreds of other authors helps to put our own authors in social and historical context. The presentations may also reflect early occasions for our authors to decide about how they wanted to be perceived by readers curious about them and how much they wanted to disclose about their private lives, in years when self-disclosing publicity was less common than now. These books may have been almost the only sources available, especially for readers in the United States, for biographical information, years before the authors became the subjects of magazine profiles, journal articles, and books.
