Holiday Ideas 2025

As we approach the end of the year, we thought we would help with holiday gifts for Tolkien lovers, or yourself. The team at TolkienGuide.com have come up with a recommendation each to help you with ideas.

We would also like to wish that everyone has a great holiday, filled with lots of Tolkien, and a happy 2026.

Feel free to post items that you think would make a great Tolkien gift.

Mr. Underhill's 2025 Holiday Gift Recommendation:
For the Tolkien fan who wants more than the stories, for the Tolkien fan who wants to go “behind the scenes” of Middle-earth’s creation. For the Tolkien fan who wants to appreciate Tolkien as a scholar in addition to being a writer. For the Tolkien fan who likes to see original art, maps, manuscripts, and rare materials tied to their favorite fantasy world. For the Tolkien fan who collects Tolkien books (or want a single comprehensive volume instead of hunting through dozens).“Maker of Middle-earth” is much more than a companion or art book: it’s a rich portrait of Tolkien’s life-work, creative process, and inner world. For the fan of Middle-earth, it’s one of a handful of books and probably the best, that add real depth and context to the stories we know and love, making the world feel more real and Tolkien himself more human.

As most of you will already know, faith played a vital role for J.R.R. Tolkien's in his life, his relationships, and his work. It might be a surprise, but until recently it was a largely glossed over subject. When a book would appear, more often than not the author would talk about Tolkien's faith without considering it critically and often reach conclusions without fair and sound reasoning, until Tolkien's Faith by Holly Ordway. Published in September 2023, this biography is an essential entry for those who want to learn more about the faith Tolkien practiced and found so important in every aspect of his life and the world around him. Holly looks at this subject critically and without making bold leaps so many before her have. Grounded in solid research and sensible conclusions, this book is a must.

lordofthemark's 2025 gift

Of course most of us love Tolkien primarily for his Middle-earth legendarium, but it’s a cause for celebration when material is published that shows us more of Tolkien’s work outside the mythology of Middle-earth. With that in mind, the recent edition of The Bovadium Fragments is a welcome addition to any Tolkien bookshelf at a modest price. Here we see Tolkien’s wry sense of humor on display in a satirical take on Oxford current events in the 1950s, complete with philological puns in Latin, a deep distrust of the “infernal combustion engine,” and more than a hint of dystopianism. It’s a short, light, and delightful read that reminds us of Tolkien’s place not just as a timeless fantasy author, but as a resident of the 20th Century.

Trotter's Holiday recommendation

It has been a huge honour to work on the Guide to Tolkien's Letters and be reminded of what a great letter writer Tolkien was. His existing published letters are also fantastic, especially as they now include nearly all the material that was originally intended to be included by the editors, Christopher Tolkien and Humphrey Carpenter. This is an ideal book to have as a Deluxe edition and I would recommend this volume for anyone interested in the life and works of The Professor.
