Tolkien Activities 1993 - The United States

Publication: The Rivendell Review [English, irregular, none published in 1993].

Additional information: After the publication of the last Rivendell Review in 1995, the group ceased to exist.

Activities: The ATS is an educational organization which will try to answer questions or refer the questioner to the appropriate person(s). They provide materials for Hobbit Day (22 September) and Tolkien Month (September) and produce annual lists of Tolkien In-Print Items and Tolkien Organizations. The ATS organizes the Shire Messenger Service which provides free copies of Tolkien's works to former Iron Curtain areas.

Awards Given: Doctor of Hobbit Letters are given to fans and scholars (occasionally artists) for their contributions to Tolkien scholarship.

The Third Annual Colloquium on the Languages of Middle-earth (ELFcon III) was held 16-18 January in Los Altos, California, USA. Many of the items presented are Tolkien linguistic materials that will be edited by members of the ELF: the Gnomish and Qenya Lexicons, the Historical Grammar of Taliska, draft workings of Adunaic, and the Alphabet of Rúmil. Papers given there were "A Taliska Dictionary", "A Preliminary Analysis of the Tengwar of Rúmil", "The Early Aduniac Texts of J.R.R. Tolkien", "To Whom It May Concern" (on gerunds in Noldorin), "A Tolkien Chronology" and "Introduction to the Ilkorin Dialects".

Activities: Mythcon 24 was held on 30 July - 1 August on the campus of The University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. A masquerade, art show and auction were featured. The following papers and items were presented: "Angelic and Sacraficial Strategies in Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings", a Tolkien art slide show, and "Battle of the Pelennor Fields" (wargame) (30 June); "Lang and Tolkien", "Stone Towers" (Pre-Celtic influence on Tolkien's language and mythology) (31 July); and, "Early Years of Tolkien Fandom", "The Present State of Elvish Scholarship", "Hobs, Hobyahs, and The Denham Tracts" (a brief survey of the old question "where did Tolkien get the word 'hobbit' from?"), "Tolkien and Lewis" (a slide show), "Surprised by Mythopoeia" (a slide show), and Middle-earth filksinging (1 August). Also, a paper was given entitled "Down the Rabbit Hole and Out the Hobbit Hole, Worlds Turned Upside Down" (about Alice and The Hobbit).
