Heritage 2017 September 14 Rare Books Signature Auction - Dallas #6201

LOT #45121 J. R. R. Tolkien. The Hobbit. Or There and Back Again. London: George Allen and Unwin, [1937]. First edition, with "First published in 1937" on the copyright page and all sixteen misprints as called for by Hammond and Anderson. Octavo. 310, [2, ads] pages; illustrated by the author; one illustration, "Norwood," is inserted. Publisher's green cloth, decoratively stamped in dark blue, front board and spine lettered in black; top edge stained green; map endpapers. In restored original first-state dust jacket, illustrated by the author, with "Dodgson" misspelled as "Dodgeson" on the back flap with the "e" blacked out by the publisher. Spine gently leaning; backstrip dulled; boards just slightly bowed; edges lightly rubbed with some light discoloration; small ding to the lower edge of the rear board; corners softly bumped; some occasional minor soiling with very faint sporadic foxing. Topstain lightly faded with a small, light stain; page edges foxed; occasional minor over-opening. Dust jacket skillfully restored at spine ends and fold edges; spine panel faintly dulled. A very good copy in a nicely restored jacket. Housed in a custom morocco clamshell case. Hammond and Anderson A3a. From a Private Collection in St. Charles, IL. In restored original first-state dust jacket, illustrated by the author, with "Dodgson" misspelled as "Dodgeson" on the back flap with the "e" blacked out by the publisher. Backstrip dulled; some discoloration where cloth was exposed prior to jacket restoration; edges lightly worn. Top edge of text block with a couple small splashes; endpapers lightly soiled; two ownership markings to front blank. Dust jacket restored at spine ends, front flap, and joints; spine panel lightly toned; some edgewear and a few small creased tears; some creasing to front panel (part of one of the repairs to the jacket); occasional light thumbsoiling. Octavo. 423, [1, colophon] pages, signature mark "4" at the bottom of page 49; map tipped to rear endpaper. [together with:] The Two Towers. London: George Allen & Unwin, 1954. First edition. Octavo. 352 pages; map tipped to rear endpaper. The Return of the King. London: George Allen & Unwin, 1955. First edition, variant three with signature mark '4' present on page forty-nine and lines 'sagging' in the middle, originally designated as first state by Hammond/Anderson, later corrected by Wayne Hammond [The Tolkien Collector, Issue 11], Octavo. 416 pages, map attached to rear endpaper. Publisher's uniform red cloth, spines lettered and stamped in gilt; top edges stained red. In restored original dust jackets, Return of the King in second state with reviewer blurbs for the first two titles on the rear flap. Spines gently leaning; board edges rubbed with a touch of minor wear; Fellowship of the Ring upper corners softly bumped; Return of the King boards slightly bowed. Page edges lightly foxed; occasional minor over-opening; ownership signature in Fellowship of the Ring with light offsetting to endpapers and rear hinge just starting; The Two Towers over-opened at pages 64-65 and pages 144-145, causing a couple sprung gatherings, with light foxing on preliminary and terminal leaves. Return of the King topstain faded, crease along upper edge of page 415/416. Dust jacket spine panels dulled; edges just a bit worn; occasional rubbing with trace wear from handling; light creasing; expert restoration to extremities of each jacket; Return of the King price-clipped.
