TCG Letter #2518

From
J.R.R. Tolkien
To
C.A. Furth
Date
21 July 1946
Type
Unknown
Transcript
Partial
Tolkien, writing to C.A. Furth apologizes for not replying to him earlier. He does not know the book Outlines of the History of the English Language by Ernest Classen but offers the opinion that "there should be a rising demand" in the future. He offers various excuses including health, having no secretary and the amount of small requests which "becomes a great labour". He is trying to focus on writing and mentions that he had received a letter from Horus Engels about a proposed German translation of The Hobbit. He notes that he has passed that request onto the publisher and asks Furth is there was any news of the earlier translation from Rütten & Loening that was due before the war. He also asks about other translations and for news on Susan Dagnall.
